HOW TO TELL VINTAGE CHINA'S AGE?

Yesterday my daughter and I went shopping around town and in one antique shoppe  she found a set of vintage Homer Laughlin China  "Virginia Rose".  She fell in love with it.  When her hubby came home from work she asked him if he would get it for her, for mother's day.  He told her to go back today and get it.  I met her there to help put it in her car, it has a few pieces missing and she's hoping to find the missing pieces.  On the back stamp are some numbers.  Can anyone tell me how to tell the date it was made?  The lady in the store looked it up on the Internet and she said from the 1940's - 1950's.

I was wondering if the 47  on it could be 1947.

I did google "How to read a back stamp" but didn't find anything to my satisfaction.  It is a beautiful set of 8 dinner plates, 6 teacups and saucers, 2 salad bowls, salt & pepper, sugar & creamer, bowls and other pieces.  I told her I would ask and blog about it and hopefully someone would have more information or had some to sale in their Etsy Shoppe.  She would like to end up with an eight piece setting.

Any help on this would be much appreciated.

Have a Blessed Day!
Sylvia

What a beautiful set, Sylvia- she's lucky she found so many pieces! Hope she didn't pay a bundle for it.

Nice thing about Homer M is its durability - it isn't so thin one is afraid to actually use it.

Make sure she doesn't ever store it in an attic or garage - extreme temperatures are known to create crackle in the glaze and pretty much render them unusable after a while.

I don't know much about their back stamps so can't be of much use to you with that good question.

Hugs. Have a great weekend.

Thanks Michele, I will pass this info along to her. I do know she intends to use it on special occasions and store it in her china cabinet. She did pay alot for it but she loves it, I suppose that's what matters, altho she did talk her down $75.

Hope your weekend is great also,
Sylvia

PS: I have a set of Homer Laughlin china. It has many pieces --- but mine is plain, cream colored eggshell nautilus with a platinum rim. It is pretty when used with beautiful table linens, but I wish it had flowers on it like this set. I found it at a neighbor's yard sale and paid $75.00 for the dish set, serving pieces, and tea/luncheon set that matches.

Oops... hit the wrong button... I believe your china was made in Aug of 1947. The first letter represents the month (eighth month, August) the numbers the year 1947 and the last letter the plant where it was made... beautiful set!... xoxo Julie Marie

I don't know anything about the back stamp, but looks like others do above. It is lovely. Again, if she loves it, that's what matters. It's fun to get "new" old china and use it for special dinners and gatherings. Would be fun to know the history of who had it before...think about "if these plates could talk"...ha ha! Thanks for sharing with us!

I guess I should have explained it better... they count the letters of the alphabet, thus"H" is the 8th letter, or 8th month, August... then the year being 47 and last number the plant where it was made...

What a beautiful tea cup - so dainty and feminine! I don't know how to date tea cups, but what Julie Marie said was very helpful :)

Hugs and love!

Great idea to buy this pretty set for your daughter will really enjoy setting her table for Mother's Day! Her husband is a smart guy and she is a happy wife. I would use some pink, pale green, or cream colored china or glass pieces with this set to accent the colors in the china. This always creates a very beautiful tablescape as Cuisine Kathleen and The Tablescaper display each week on their blogs. When she finds what she wants then she can use the matching pieces. You can find more of this set at Replacements.com for they are a china finder company with hugh warehouses. The only problem with them is they are expensive. I have been out shopping this week and found a Schumann teaset for 8 with all pink and gold and is a combination of what Replacements named SCH 481 and SCH 65. By the way, according to Replacements the shape of your daughter's pattern is named "Virginia Rose" with pink and white florals named Pattern JJ59 which they named HLCJJ59. The have cup and saucer at 11.99, salad at 7.99, bread and butter at 6.99 and dinner plate at 37.99. In the 25% off they have coupe cereal bowl at 8.99 and coupe soup bowl at 13.49. They are very dependable and helpful in their shipping for I have used them to fill in sets for years. They will also put you own their call list if you are looking for something in particular. Try doing a search at Replacements and hope this is helpful to your daughter!

Hi Sylvia,

I have the same Virginia Rose pattern by Homer Laughlin. When I get home after work I will try to remember to look at the bottom of mine to see if I have the same number on it. I believe the circa is 1934. It is a very old pattern and is also know as "Fluffy Rose". I hope this helps your daughter. Happy Mother's Day to you!
